I believe the subrosa theme of The Martian is a challenge in the form of a wake-up slap to us all. Simply put, if one man can engineer his survival on an inhospitable wasteland, why can’t we engineer our survival on our home planet of such abundance?
Gaia theory holds that the earth is a system. Since we are just an emergent part of the system, like a yeast colony, we cannot really destroy the earth despite our efforts to make a buck and enslave a few billion in the bargain. Happy Earth Day!
Last night, I was helping my 11-yo son with his history assignment: a comic, showing the evolution of mankind from the stone age, to the neolithic, to the modern industrial phase. In Oliver’s last panel, his Homo sapiens sapiens concluded that the efficiencies of a mechanized world allowed them to enjoy being human.
This morning, I was pleased to find a similar sentiment from none less that Carlos Slim, the world’s richest man.
